Genealogy From Scratch

(a Web Blog discontinued in 2005)

This project encompasses the Bobeyko, Cortwright, Curry, Hawkins, Kamiak/Kaminsky, Matthews, Ozark/Ovcarik, Richard,  Robichaud, Woulf and affiliated families hailing from Chicago, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Poland and Russia.  Ultimately, these families all converged via marriages in Chicago ... in case you were wondering at the connection!

This is an opportunity to track a new genealogy (family history) project and watch it evolve.  We will start by working from some information provided by the family and then use various resources to find additional information.  Additionally, this project will be used to try out the new Family Tree Maker 2005 software.

This is similar to a "web blog"  in that it is a chronological listing of the progress of this project. The easiest way to use this page is to do a "find" for whatever families and places interest you.  Obviously, you are free to read it in a linear fashion also -- it is arranged chronologically!

Here is a table of the families and places ... we will try to update this as we work on the project!  A hyperlink means that we have posted to the web-site some form of write-up about the family (this does NOT necessarily mean a final report!).  These are all available on the Dave's Family page.

Families Locales
Bobeyka Matskevichi Minsk Russia (Belarus), Chicago Illinois
Cortright Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe) & Allentown Pennsylvania
Kamiak/Kaminsky & Sarytchoff Minsk Russia (Belarus), Chicago Illinois
Matthews & Hutchinson Glamorgan (Bridgend, Coity, Llangynwyd, Maesteg, Newcastle, Swansea) & Monmouthshire (Maindee, Newport) & London area
Currey & Hawkins Bristol Gloucestershire & Glamorgan & Somerset
Ozark/Owczarek/Ovcarik & Dorachowski Kalisz/Kalisch Poland, Chicago Illinois
Richard Quebec Canada, Coleman/Pound Wisconsin
Robichaud St. Alphonse - Rodriguez Quebec Canada, Coleman/Pound Wisconsin
Woulf St. Calixte Quebec Canada, Coleman/Pound Wisconsin

NOTE: All the Family Files that have been created as a result of this project are located on a separate page.  This collection of files is a work in progress and will always lag behind what we know!  This page is always more current than the Family Files page.

NOTE:  the resources used were a mix of those available for FREE on the internet and others were accessed through paid SUBSCRIPTION services.  If you click on a graphic below, a new window will open introducing you to that service/product.

Small print ... Since each project is unique, it does not mean that all projects would progress this way nor does it mean that we would do it this way if we were to do it again.  We just thought you might find it interesting and valuable to see what goes into a genealogy project.  Also, in the interest of space ... not every single Google search or other activity is listed ... we frequently use an iterative approach where we re-visit resources and research methodology to make sure we followed every possible information lead!  There will also be "pauses" in the action as we work on other projects.  Check back frequently to see how we are progressing!

12/20/2004 Pulled together and organized by family lines the available information The original collection was just a random collection of bits and pieces of documents, notes and other materials.  These were arranged along major family lines of: Bobeyko, Kaminsky, Matthews/Richards (subsequently broken into Matthews, Richards, Cortright) ... subsequently Richards was separated into Richards, Woulf, Robichaud N/A
12/22/2004 Research Chicago marriage of Andreu Bobeyko Knew that Andreu Bobeyko married Anna (maiden name Kaminsky except that she had previously married and her first husband's name was unknown).  Knew that the marriage had to take place after 1910 (when he emigrated) and before about 1914 when first child was born.  Andreu's name was unusual enough that it was hoped that would narrow the possibilities.

Used the services of Chicago Genealogy, www.chicagogenealogy.com.  A great service (for nominal fees) for tracking down certain basic Chicago records! Success! We now have a 20 January 1911 wedding date and a married name for Anna of Makazenja.

12/22/2004 Researched Ellis Island for Walter Matthews www.ellisisland.org -- Found passenger record in 1906 departing from Southampton and arriving to Ellis Island.  This indicated that he came from London.  Well, we know from a birth certificate that he was born in Newport, Monmouth, England (apparently Wales)

12/25/2004 Collected some resource material for Polish/Russian research & re-cap of some previously found information As soon as one starts researching emigrees from non-English speaking countries or regions, it helps to familiarize with certain resources.  Particularly useful are: mini-dictionaries that include the terms that you might come across when researching source records.  Some of those collected for this project include:

Several resources from the Polish Genealogical Society of America, http://www.pgsa.org/ (look under Databases in Directory for source material)

Something on Cyrillic Script ... http://www.ia.net/~jcarroll/privet/script.html

Another key resource is the PolandGenWeb site ... http://www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/polandgen.html (just all kinds of great help pages, like Polish Terms, and data pages, the latter at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/polandarchives.html)

Another great resource: Polish Roots ... http://polishroots.com/

Researching Russian Roots: http://www.mtu-net.ru/rrr/

Genealogia: http://www.genealogia.ru/en/main/

Cyndislist for Eastern Europe ... http://www.cyndislist.com/easteuro.htm

Other Russian resources ... this area is challenging because of all the conflicts and the changing geopolitical boundaries!  http://maxpages.com/poland/Russian_Research http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/6587/Russia.html http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=5080

1/11/05 -- Started inputting the "original data" and then this census data for the Bobeyko and Wengerski families

1. Date entry seems easy

2. Like the scrapbook feature for including images of documents etc...

3. Struggled with how to include Passenger Record, Census & other ancillary information ... finally ... you use the Edit function on the family view page (basic family structure) to add "Facts" ... you can choose from an extensive drop down list or create your own.

4. Can create a scrapbook for each entry ... great way to collect relevant photos which can be labeled and source information given

5. Nice that you can have as many sources as you want for an item ... you just keep adding what you have.

6. Nice that you can associate images with your sources as well as individuals and events

7. Report created: Bobejko Book 011105,  (see 1/11/05 log for more infor)

12/25/2004 Census entries for Wengerski, Bobeyko, etc.  families Ancestry.com found in 1920 Census -- Andreu?? Bobieko, found daughter, Anna B. Bobeyka (and then wife & 2nd husband, name Wengerski) in 1930 census  (then looked at 1910 & 1920 census for Wengerski ... just as filler).  Have not found Andreu in the 1910 census ... he emigrated in February 1910 and the census was done later that year (April 15th) ... the 1910 census though is the hardest to search in ... if we can't find a family... it will be in 1910 -- the only available index is for Head of Households ... odds are that Andrew was boarding with someone and hence, not a head of household! -- the same holds for Anna (his future wife)!
12/25/2004 Hamburg Passenger Lists Recognizing that Antoni Owczarek emigrated via Hamburg, this provides a nice opportunity to investigate the Hamburg Passenger web-site a bit more ... http://linktoyourroots.hamburg.de/ (currently, records covering 1890-1906 are available).  Curious to see how the information matches up with Ellis Island record. Index for Ellis Island has Anton Owczarik and the Hamburg index has Antoni Owczarek.  If you have found your ancestor in the Ellis Island or other databases, we would not bother with the Hamburg ones.  To obtain a copy of the passenger record was pricey (compared to Free) and no new information was found ... the record stated: Owczarek, Antoni, 34, verheirate (married), Russland (Russia), Kalisz, Tishler/Geselle (Assistant Carpenter), Passenger # 01.1213, Passage # A1904.0413, Zwischendeck (Steerage), Date of departure 03.12.1904, Dover-Boulogne sur Mer - New York, Name of Ship = Moltke

Helped by German Occupation Definitions - English Translations, http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/GermanOccs.htm

Dict.cc, Online Translation Service, http://www.dict.cc

1/18/2005 -- added in both the Ellis Island and the Hamburg passenger information for Antoni Owczarek.  Ended up doing it twice ... the record seemed to disappear ... putting it down to operator error!

Knowing mother, found Walter ... also confirmed with 1901 census available at:  Ancestry.com (found in Ilford Essex ...).  Interestingly, his father is not with the family ... requires further research.  Found the father in a different locale.

2/3/2005 -- entered 1881, 1891 & 1901 census data for this family ... this led us to make sure that we entered the family structure.  We also realized that in 1891, Frances Hawkins, her aunt, was living with them!

We also did some research on London ... see below

already had 1920 census ... showing family  in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  Found family in 1930 census, still in Chicago.  With marriage in 1911 in Delaware ... looked for Walter in Delaware, NJ and NY in 1910 ... no success ... even a global search did not look promising!

worked from 1910 forward & backward knowing that Emily Cortright was in Allentown in 1911.

remember that the 1890 census was mostly destroyed.  The censuses before 1840 just list Heads of Households and how many others are in the household ... less useful unless you can easily follow the Head of Household)

1/21/05 -- enter data on Cortright & allied families

1. Nice to find Frederick & Agnes Cortright & family in 1910 in Allentown ... entered all family data; same for 1920

2. the family found in the 1900 census has all the right kids and the right wife ... the husband's name is now Allman Cortright!  Allman to Frederick!?!?! This also gave the lead to Mauch Chunk!

3. Now leap back to 1880 since 1890 not available ... luckly Agnes has kept the same name and Frederick the same occupation (carpenter) & they were in East Mauch Chunk

4. Next leap is finding a Cortright family with a son Alman about 13 in 1870.  We find a 13 year old Elman Cortright in East Mauch Chunk!  Discovered another resource ...  Mauch Chunk - Turn of the Century Pictures & realized that it might help to join a mailing list PACARBON-D@rootsweb.com since birth and marriage records have been impossible to find!.

1/1/2005 Woulf & Richard & Robichaud Families in Census Ancestry.com

Marinette Wisconsin ... particularly Coleman and Pound.  Learned that through the years 1880 on, the community changed name from Peshtigo to Coleman to Pound ... all in Marinette County!  knew that the linking marriage of Amanda Robichaud to Frank Woulf took place in August 1884 at Coleman Wisconsin.  So, worked by looking at 1880 census and hoped to find the families ... as it was known that they were originally French Canadian ... eventually, a daughter of Amanda and Frank, Cora, marries Edward Richard (also French Canadian) so looked for his family also.

Starting in 1880 find "Laoh Rabesho" alias Leon Robichaud in Peshtigo Marinette Wisconsin and in 1900 he is living with daughter Amanda and family in Coleman Marinette Wisconsin (both sons also in Coleman!) -- tracked brother Nazaire through 1930

Starting in 1900 we find "Frank Woulf" and family in Coleman, Marinette Wisconsin -- and, Frank's brother Euclid is next door!  We might have also found brother Marcel (listed as Merida Woulf! and living near Alcid Robichaud!) ... we find all 3 brothers in 1910, we find all 3 brothers in 1920, by 1930 we find Marcel & Euclid and not Frank (though Fred who may be a son!) ... at this point there are many Wolf (& variants) throughout the state of Wisconsin. We also find brother Adelard living in Two Rivers in 1930 ... let's now check backwards! We can find him in 1920 in Two Rivers ... can't find him before that though the census states that he emigrated in about 1885!

There is also a Wisconsin Census for Marinette County taken in 1900 ... it doesn't appear to have any new information.

Found Edmond Richard and family in the 1900-1930 census.  Have not found in the 1880 census

1/1/2005 Wisconsin Death, Marriage, Birth Index Ancestry.com

Pre-1907 Births, Marriages and Deaths are indexed

1. found marriage of Cora Woulf & Isaie Richard, 6 Oct 1903, Marinette, Vol 02 Page 377

2. found death of Leon Robechand, 1 Apr 1907, Marinette, Vol 03 Page 74

3. found marriage of Amanda Robicheault to Francis Wolf, 17 Jun 1884, Marinette, Vol 01 Page 80

4. found marriage of Nazaire Robichand to possibly Annie Nequette, 3 Nov 1892, Marinette, Vol 01 Page 357

5. found marriage of Alcide Robichean to ???, 22 Aug 1898, Marinette, Vol 02 Page 195

6. possible death certificate for an Alfred Robichaud (could this be Alcid/Alead?) ... this would explain losing him after the 1910 census!

1/2/2005 Check Canadian 1881 Census for Woulf family Though Frances Woulf states in the census that he emigrated c. 1878, he could not be found in the 1880 census ... so, it was decided to check the 1881 Canadian census index, http://www.familysearch.org/

Lo and behold, we find Frances and his parents and siblings in Quebec in Ste-Calixte, Montcalm which is where it was understood the family originated from! They are a Catholic family of farmers!

1/2/2005 Check online 1901 Canadian Census The 1901 Canada Census can be searched.  It can be accessed via the Library and Archives of Canada: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020122_e.html or via a project called "Automated Genealogy": http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html The latter is easier to use as it is an index, whereas the Archives of Canada version requires a knowledge of where they were on census night and then you can go through the returns.

1. found a Robichaud Family in Saint-Alphonse, Jolliette, Quebec ... the originating point of the Wisconsin Robichaud's ... maybe a brother of Leon?

2. Wolfe is a little trickier as it is a more popular name and has many variant spellings ... focusing on Montcalm, Quebec .. nothing jumped out ... we do know that besides Frances, his brother Euclid also emigrated to Wisconsin

1910+ census for Richard family lines

Ancestry.com Found a birth (pre-1907 Wisconsin births) for a Joseph A Richard (could this be Albert) , 14 April 1879, Marinette ... this coincides with the 1900 census saying he was born in April 1879 in Wisconsin.  Still ... this family cannot be found in the 1880 census!  Also, cannot consistently find the family members between 1900 and 1930 ... starting filling in the gaps and following related lines of the children of Edmund and Azarine.  Found something for most of the children from 1910+

1/7/2005 Rechecked Robichaud family web site http://www.robichaud.info/ rechecked for listed info.  Found not only specific dates for Robichaud events ... also found the Woulf family (since it married into this family)!

Wow!  They have traced the Robichaud family and some of the affiliated families back to the 1600s in Nova Scotia and some lines to 1600 in France! Short of confirming the information that has been found, which would be time consuming ... we will wait for the Pedigree Resource CD and see where that gets us and in the meantime focus on the other lines!

1/8/2005 Passenger Records for Kaminsky and Makazenja records

Cook County, Illinois resources

Re-examining the Ellis Island records, www.ellisisland.org ... more than likely they came via Ellis Island and have had no success finding the listed families or the Sarytchoff family (married into) ... will now try to look for Cook County, Illinois, Naturalization records as these frequently give information on when the individual emigrated and how.

Also researched out Cook County resources -- Cook County GenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcook/ , Chicago Historical Society http://www.chicagohs.org/collections/genealogy.html, Newberry Library http://www.newberry.org/genealogy/L3gabout.html, Polk's 1928 Directory http://www.chsmedia.org/househistory/polk/Menus/Main%20Menu.pdf, Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court http://www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org/ (includes an archive section

Illinois state-wide resources http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.html (archives), http://www.idph.state.il.us/vitalrecords/genealogicalinfo.htm  ... also looked at Bobejo and found a son born to Andreu and Anna ... this matches a family rumor of the first child being a son!

Again, requested a copy using: www.chicagogenealogy.com

1/8/2005 Re-visit Chicago Census for 1910-1920 ... Ovcarik or Ozark Family and related sources Ancestry.com, found family in 1910 ... instead of Anthony Owcarek (or variant) he became Tony Ouczcarek!

Followed up with the Illinois death index, http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrch.html and follow many possible family members

2. Entered the census data and need to enter passenger and get the family structure established

3. like that you can ad information on alternate names ... basically you can add any kind of "fact" you want whether it's supported or not!

1/9/2005 Revisit 1910 Family for Bobeyko or Anna Having the death certificate from 1912 for a possible son of Andreu and Anna, we have used the address and Steve Morse's "Obtaining EDs for the 1910 or 1930 Census for Large Cities in One Step http://www.stevemorse.org/census/index.html to narrow this address to EDs 757 or 758 in the 1910 Chicago Census ... since our source uses Chicago Wards we then used mapquest (www.mapquest.com) to see where the address is nowadays and then used the maps of http://www.alookatcook.com/ to visually see which Ward/District ... this came up with ED 745 ... we will now look at the 1910 census for the address and see who lives there!  Unfortunately, looking at Ancestry.com did not show either of these families at this address in 1910 .. oh well ...

We could similarly work from the address that Andrei gave on the Passenger manifest, 1949 Webster Ave ...in 1910 this is part of Ward 16 and ED 747.  Again ... no success finding Andrei or Gregor Vowick ... until there is an every name index ... it's a needle in a haystack since no emigrant was a "head of household."

NOTE:  Steve Morse has created so many tools that are invaluable to genealogy research ... check them out at: http://www.stevemorse.org/

1/11/2005 Research on Chicago Church where Andreu Bobejka married

Using the information on the marriage certificate, researched on www.google.com for references to a Russian Church in Chicago in 1911.  Discovered that it is the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral built in 1906, located at 1121 N. Leavitt Street (which matches the marriage certificate).  Some references about this church are:

1/11/2005 WWI Draft Registration Information Considered re-researching the WWI Draft Registration list at Ancestry.com and realized that it's not part of our current subscription package ... need to debate adding this element ... if we overlooked Andrew and could find him ... it would give a pre-1920 address! 1/12/2005 Order Anna & Ignatz Wengerski Marriage Certificate Ordering a "genealogical" copy of the marriage certificate for Anna Kamiak/Makazenja and her 3rd husband Ignatz Wengerski ... the hope is to learn information about her parents.  For Cook County Illinois, details on ordering certificates is at http://www.cookctyclerk.com/sub/genealogy_requests.asp?VR=2

Also rechecked http://www.deathindexes.com/illinois/cook.html to see if their are death indices that would have relevant info

1/12/05

1. added in Anna 2nd marriage to Ignatz Wengerski and the Kamiak sisters ... easy to add a 2nd marriage

2. added in available family photos

3. completed first pass at Bobeyko & Kamiak families

1/12/2005 Zasamovich Family Looking through more family notes ... the name Zasamovich is mentioned.  Apparently, Helen Zasamovich is a cousin to the Kamiak/Kaminsky sisters ... so, researching census records at Ancestry.com as a start.  Have found the family in the 1930 ... not in 1920 (that pesky head of household issue!)

Now, odds are that there are no records that we will be able to obtain for Andreu since so many of the records have been destroyed for Belarus ... only mid 19th century and modern records remain.

1/14/2005 used "Family History Online" for Matthews & Hutchinson Families  FFHS has a great online pay-per-view service for databases of England and Wales: http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/.  This is great as you can do a FREE search and you only pay pennies to actually access information on the records found and only when you choose to look at the record. And, some records are free like the 1881 census (available also at www.familsearch.org).  Researched on the Hutchinson family in Glamorgan -- Found death of Eleanor's mother, Georgina.  No other entries appeared to be new or relevant (entered into Family Tree Maker starting 1/25/05 with info subsequently found)
1/14/2005 Family Search This reminded us to check out the Family Search site www.familysearch.org  for the IGI ... previously we had focused on the 1881 UK Census.    We know from the census that James Hutchinson was born c. 1833 in Llandenwyd ... well, we found what could be his birth -- James Hutchinson, 12 August 1832, Llangynwyd, Glamorgan, Wales child of John & Ann Hutchinson ...

1/16/2005 1861 Glamorgan Census

& Hutchinson Family

Heard back on a inquiry into someone with the 1861 Glamorgan census ... James Hutchinson and family were found!  This has the mother-in-law and sister living with the family ... confirms a considered link to the Hawkins family based on subsequent censuses.  Searching the IGI again, www.familysearch.org  we find Georgina Currey Hawkins and a sister Frances Mary Hawkins born In Bristol Gloucestershire to George and Frances Mary Hawkins!  Eureka ... we know that Georgina C. Hutchinson was listed as Georgina Currey Hutchinson when she died!

Discovered another interesting site ... British History Online http://www.british-history.ac.uk/

Glamorgan Record Office http://www.glamro.gov.uk/ (great collection of records and unfortunately only in-person searches available) ... making inquiry to see if can learn about "The National School" in Bridgend.

It was recognized revisiting Genuki and the resources for Coity that christenings from 1844-1875 are in the IGI.  So, we then revisited www.familysearch.org and searched on Hutchinson baptisms for children of James and Georgina and came up with George James in 1857 ... matches 1861 census entry! Cannot find his siblings though!

Revisited Historical Directories http://www.historicaldirectories.org/  and there are several directories covering Glamorgan and area ... including Bristol!  This explains how a family from Bristol Gloucestershire ends up in Bridgend Glamorgan area!

I will note that finding UK maps on line is challenging.  Sometimes they are too historic, sometimes too large, sometimes the focus is too narrow.  Haven't found a good map to show the geographic connection between Bristol and Glamorgan ... will probably end up using a whole country map and cropping it!

1/18/2005 Continue Ozark Family data entry Picked up with the data entry of the Ozark / Owczarek family information in Family Tree Maker.

Realized that an infant daughter died between 1905 and 1910 ... name appears to be Jadwiga (from passenger record) ... using a great resource on cross-referencing names http://www.rootsweb.com/~scoconee/names3.pdf it appears that the English equivalent would be Hedwig.  We can then use this information to search the Illinois pre-1916 death database http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/deathsrch.html We do find a Hedwig Owczarek who died 6/10/1906 at 1 year of age ... a possibility. And, discover another daughter (born c. 1909) who died between 1910 and 1920.. name looks like Judwika ... if we look at the same index, we find Owczarek, Jadwiga, 2/21/1912, Chicago at 3 years of age ... definite possibility.

Realize that son Joseph is not with family in 1930 ... Ancestry.com reveals that he is now married, wife Victoria ... he shares the occupation of his brothers Edward and Theodore ... Chauffeur for a taxi service!

Have death notices for both Antoni and Michalina (listed as Maria) in Dziennik Chicagoski, http://www.pgsa.org/dzien3071.htm ... a start has been made at translating these (using http://www.poltran.com/pl.php4 and .  We learn that Antoni was buried from St. Hyacynth church.  You can learn more about the church at http://www.pgsa.org/ArchChiPolPar/StHyacinthChi.htm and Michalina was buried from Our Lady of Fatimah Mission Church.  We also discovered the Archdiocese of Chicago's archive center, http://archives.archchicago.org/

Here is a Family Tree Maker report (excluding images) created for Antoni Owczarek and family reporting on known information.

Used the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/  to add a bit more information on the death dates and birth dates of those listed in the index.

1/19/2005 Message Boards another helpful resource can be message boards... there are message boards located all over the www.  Odds are that in any search for a locality or surname, you will discover a message board.  We have posted a few messages to boards on Kalisz and Owczarek and Monmouthsire and Matthews and Minsk and Bobeyka & Kamiak / Kaminsky! N/A
1/19/2005 National Schools(Wales) Learned more about the school that James Hutchinson was associated with.

Learned a bit about "National Schools" from the Glamorgan Record office ... they have records from the one in Bridgend that James Hutchinson was associated with. For £15 they can research his involvement ... the challenge with that is they only accept checks/money orders ... still a challenge to do without incurring $20 charge to get that check ...

Looking into the topic a bit more ... The National Society for Promoting Religious Education http://www.natsoc.org.uk/society/history.php has some history

We then discovered that an excellent series of Bridgend local history books has been published by Natalie Murphy.  These are depicted to the right with links to B&N if you are interested in purchasing them.  They are also available from the Bridgend Library ... check out their resource list for the area! http://www.bridgend.gov.uk/english/library/

1/19/2005 Revisted FamilyHistoryOnline for Glamorgan Knowing that the 1841 census for Glamorgan is available via this service and that we have no reason to believe that James Hutchinson ever left the area (though he could have) and that a search of the IGI reveals a Hutchinson family from Llangynwyd with a father James and a mother Ann, we revisited this resource www.familyhistoryonline.net. In 1851 we found a family which did not include James whom we believe to be around 18 ... makes us wonder if he went to Bristol and that is how the Hawkins family (his wife's family) then came to be in Glamorgan -- though we find her family, minus her in Coity in 1851!?!?!  It is also a little confused in that the IGI lists all the children as having parents of James and Ann Hutchinson except for James Jr ... his parents are listed as John and Ann and yet there are no other children listed for that set of parents ... also, unless Ann had children at 15, this family might be a 2nd marriage for James Sr.

Organized all Hutchinson, Hawkins & Matthews files ... chronologically.

1/19/2005 W now know where Andrei Bobeyko came from and who is father is! Map showing Matskevichi, BelarusAh, ah ... requesting some assistance to an ancestry.com message board has paid off ... a message board member assisted us by translating the passport and tombstone inscription of Andrei.  From this we learned that he was from the village Matskevichi, Bystritsa volost, Slutsk uyezd, Minsk Gubernia.  We also learned that his fathers name was Stepan.

Someone suggested http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/ (which links to www.mapquest.com) and we were able to find a town called Matskevichi SSW of Minsk and it is near a town called Bystritsa near Slutsk!

Map showing BelarusAnother great resource for locating a small village is: http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=mmfn

So, this is probably Andrei's ancestral village!

1/19/2005 Maiden name of Michalina Owczarek Trying to find this information via a birth certificate for Ted (Tadeusz) Owczarek ... apparently, there is no centralized birth index for Cook County Illinois.  Someone has taken a look at the available hand-written birth register for March 1907 and was unable to find his entry ... as the first child born in the US to Antoni and Michalina, he was the best bet at getting good information.  Am pursuing whether a younger sibling would be easier to find ... otherwise, might have to work from Teddy Ozark's marriage certificate and cross our fingers! 1/21/2005 Mailing Lists & Newsgroups Another resource is mailing lists and newsgroups ... these are great places to post a query to see if someone is researching your family or your locale or your family in a certain locale or a certain topic, etc... A good resource for a listing of what is out there can be found at Genealogy Resources on the Internet. Some of the newsgroups we introduced ourselves on are: GEN-SLAVIC-L@rootsweb.com & CHICAGO-POLISH-L@rootsweb.com

Already heard back from someone on the Chicago-Polish one with obituaries from the Chicago Tribune! In this case, both Antoni and Michalina are associated with St. Hyacinth Church ... so, we did some research on this church: http://www.conradschmitt.com/CaseStudies/StHyacinth.asp , http://www.pgsa.org/ArchChiPolPar/StHyacinthChi.htm

Also learned about the Chicago Tribune Archives ... including death notices covering 1860-1984!1

1/23/2005 Gloucestershire Checked out the Gloucestershire Look-up Exchange, http://freespace.virgin.net/isabel.easter/Glos.html (9/11/06 - inoperative), to see if I could get some information on the Hawkins family ... remember it was Georgina Currey Hawkins who married James Hutchinson -- can we find the family c. 1841 in Bristol?

Also found a Bristol and Somerset Mailing List ... have subscribed to that. Bristol_and_Somerset-D@rootsweb.com and posted a query stating the details known about the Hawkins family and links to Curry and Dyer.

Someone kindly found Georgina with her grandparents, Robert & Mary Currey in 1851 in Bristol.  So, her mother and brother went to the cousins in Swansea while Georgina stayed in Bristol.  One has to surmise that sometime before 1861 she moved to the Glamorgan area as the eldest daughter had with James Hutchinson was born c. 1860 in Bridgend.  1830 Directory shows Robert Curry, Boot & Shoemaker.  In fact ... there has been so much assistance from the Bristol and Somerset mailing list that my head is spinning with Hawkins, Curry and Dyer family information!

They have also been able to provide the marriage of George Hawkins and Frances Mary Curry and confirmed the baptisms of some of their children!

1/25/2005 --

1. using some of this information, started entering the basic family structure information

2. got distracted looking up information on the many churches that the Hawkins & Curry families were associated with in Bristol.

3. Now that there is more data entered ... we really appreciate the different "looks" you can take and "trees" and "charts" that you can produce ... nice feature

4. Still wish that the image files and data files were together so that you can easily access both

2/3/2005 --2/4/2005

1. Started entering the referenced PR, MI and BT info for Llangynwyd and Hutchinson

2. We are reminded that James Sr. had a daughter Jane with first wife Martha ... when/where did she marry or die before 1851?

(no marriage or death found!)

1/23/2005 Unrelated research Research into Lancashire family -- Fountain -- unrelated to this project
1/23/2005 1891 Census -- Wales & other Got so involved with going backwards for Hutchinson & Hawkins families, forgot to go forward and track the Hawkins family in Glamorgan in 1891, Ancestry.com, it's now done!  We find George Hawkins deceased and Edgar R. Hutchinson, nephew living with the widow.

Also went back and filled in the Hutchinson family in the censuses from 1871 through 1891 ... including all identified collateral lines. Using Ancestry.com and www.familysearch.org ... also rechecked IGI for entries and www.familyhistoryonline.net for information to fill in the gaps.  Also queried back to the Glamorgan look-up exchange to see about the family in the 1861 census ... make the bridge from 1851 to 1871 ... the family was found so that answers some questions! So, now have lots of census data to shift through.

Someone on the Glamorgan look up exchange was able to help with some PR, MIs and BTs for Llangynwyd (St. Cywnyd) which is the church that the Hutchinson family was associated with ... at least the family of James Sr.!  This revealed that James Hutchinson Sr married twice, first to Martha and then to Ann ... this helps explain some stuff ... have the MI for the parents showing both marriages!  Also, many marriage, christening, burial and MI entries to sift through!

1/24/2005 Computer Crash Complete hard-disk failure ... day spent recovering! Combined with the heat/air unit going belly-up and the car needing repair work ... not my "Midas" day!
1/25/2005 Family Tree Maker data entry Started on the Hutchinson & Hawkins & Curry data entry into Family Tree Maker ... putting the basic structure information and not the details ....

This lead to some more queries to those that helped before to see about Burial and/or MI records for Bristol and also if there are other Curry children (particularly John and James) still alive and in Bristol in 1851 ...

1/25/2005 Church research Researched the churches in Bristol that the family was associated with.

Was reminded of the site ... Images of England (always worth checking out)

Re-visited www.historicaldirectories.org to look for the Curry family in the directories previously searched for the Hawkins family ... found the Curry members in the 1851 Directory for Bristol and this gives us a specific street address consistent with the 1851 Census entry ... 32 Picton Street.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com is too overloaded to do a search on Curry/Currey for Bristol for the period 1837-1871 to see if we can find some relevant events.

(see column entries ... know data has been entered, dlr 3/3/05)
1/26/2005 Glamorgan Made a request to Genholic (9/11/06 - inoperable) ... for a lookup at the Glamorgan Electoral Register (1845-1846) to see if James Hutchinson listed.  He's not nor are other Hutchinsons's.

A brief overview of who could vote is here: http://www.familia.org.uk/electoral.html (9/11/06 - inoperable)

Also did an inquiry related to St. Illytad's church, Newcastle, Glamorgan where Georgina Currey Hutchinson is buried and at least 1 son was baptized there ... trying to see if there are MI's or other christenings or marriages listed.

Reminded of the site: Church Plans Online ... it has many plans of many.  Had a plan for St. Illtyd's, Newcastle

Checked National  Burial Index (NBI) 2nd Edition now that we know that Georgina Curry Hutchinson was buried at St. Illyd ... unfortunately, no other family members appear in the list.  Though, we did get Hutchinson data for Llangynwyd ... we can match this up against the information received from our earlier request to the Glamorgan Look-up exchange. (much of this information overlaps with what's available on www.familyhistoryonline.net as the NBI was part of the basis for the Glamorgan information.  The NBI itself is nice as you can re-arrange the date you find by date, by name, by place, or whatever ... very convenient!

2/4/2005 -- continued entering data from BT & PR, started entering census data and burial index data ... lots of data so slow going ... and, every time you add a piece of data you realize a question you had!

1/27/2005-1/28/2005 Monmouth Learned that many newsgroups or mailing lists have archive areas ... the Monmouth one has a great archive at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/monfh/files/ .  Also the moderator has a great site of transcriptions and other information ... Monmouthshire Families N/A

1/31/2005 Hutchinson quest!! Realized that in 1861 James Hutchinson was the proprietor of the "Farmer's Arms" in Cwmdu Hamlet (Llangynwyd) and posted a query about that establishment and the geography of Cwmdu (this maybe the same establishment http://www.thefarmersarms.com/).  Have been trying to trace Ann Jones in Pontarddulais and have received some info on possible christenings.  Have confirmed that Georgina, Mother and 2 children Hutchinson are buried in Newcastle (St. Illtud) as well as other Hutchinsons buried in the area with no idea where husband James (Jr) is ... ah, some answers and some continued mysteries!

We are reminded that another great resource for UK census and directory CDs is the Archive CD Books project.  They are scanning documents and creating CDs.  A related site on genealogy that also includes forums and resource material is called British Genealogy.

Learned that there is a Pub History Society ... posted a query re: James Hutchinson and the Farmer's Arms.  Also, "Researching Historic Buildings in Britain"

2/1/2005 1879 Marriage Certificate -- William Matthews and Eleanor Georgina Hutchinson Received the marriage certificate for William Matthews and Eleanor Georgina Hutchinson.  Key details are that William's father was Walter Matthews and he was deceased.  The witnesses were James Hutchinson (one supposes Eleanor's father) and Lucy Jane Matthews (mother or sister of William).  They were married in the Chapel of Nolton, Parish of Coity.  The date appears to be November 18, 1879.

A question ... is the Chapel of Nolton the same as St. Mary's Nolton found at: http://www.coitywithnolton.com/coity.htm (9/11/06 - inoperable)

Using this and Ancestry.com to look at the 1881 and 1871 census .. we believe that we have found the family.  Husband Walter, wife Jane, including a daughter Lucy Jane ... in St. Woollos area of Monmouth, specifically the town of Duffryn.  Some siblings born Basseleg, http://www.smart1313.freeserve.co.uk/bassaleg.htm (9/11/06 - inoperable) ... though no William in 1871!

Re-posted to the Monmouth family list to see if the new information sparks any suggestions or information.

Checked out the National Library of Wales site ... has a marriage bonds index and some other relevant resource materials.

2/2/2005 Monmouthshire Family History -- Yahoo Group Wow!  The moderator of this group, Mike John, has pieced together a tremendous amount of material on the Matthews family working with what was found in the marriage certificate and the 1871/1881 census info.  He has been able to work backwards and actually found information on both the paternal and maternal families!  It will take a while to print out, download (scans and indexes of data from the tremendous amount of original resource data on his site, Monmouthshire Families), arrange it all chronologically and make sense of it.  You can follow the exchange by checking out the groups archives, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/monfh/messages, and search on Matthews. 3/4-3/5-3/6 -- data entry (see column entries)
2/2/2005 Cortright and Mauch Chunk Received an e-mail from someone else researching the Cortright family in Mauch Chunk.  They too believe that Butler, ND and Ira Cortright are probably related and have been unable to make those linkages or research the lines back further though this person did have some related information on the maternal line!  This was in response to a query to the Carbon County PA Mailing list, PACARBON-D@rootsweb.com see 3/4/2005 for what entered
2/3/2005 Farmer's Arms Heard back from a local studies assistant at the Bridgend Library that Ann Hutchinson in 1865 carried on the trade of her husband, that the Farmer's Arms was at 121 Commercial Street and that it closed about 1977 and that the library has a bit more information and a photograph that it can send along to me. 2/4/2005 Hutchinson family in 1891 We are still puzzled by not finding the Hutchinson family, James, 2 sons and a daughter in the 1891 census ... odds are that they did not all died between 1881 and 1891.  After trying and trying and trying to find them ...it was decided to check out the 1901 census ... at least the children should still be alive ... this can be accessed as a pay per services used at: http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Lo and behold ... we have found at least Frances Hawkins living with a nephew in Ilford ... well, that is where her niece Eleanor Hutchinson Matthews is living!  Also, we find that with Frances we find Charles F. Hutchinson!  (that is at least 1 of the children!).  Also, we find a Mathews child ... don't think a child of Eleanor and that hasn't been ruled out yet!  They are at 137 Balfour Road.

Also discovered that Eleanor's brother is in Derby in 1901 as a Church of England clergy ... in 1891 he is still in Swansea as a student.  Also in 1901 we find Frances Hawkins living with a nephew ... in Ilford ... where Eleanor and family is living!  Also, Charles F Hutchinson, brother of Eleanor is with Frances!

So, related to the Church of England ...

With the help of Ron Davies ... have found sister Georgina married to William Thomas in Middlesex in 1891 and in 1901 he is a widow and this is the family that Frances and Charles are living with ... it's starting to come together!  So, this leaves James and George to be found of the Hutchinson family!

Found James in 1891 in Devon of all places ... remarried with a wife Sarah, working as a Commercial Traveller and from Maesteg.  Sarah is a widow by 1901 indicating that James died between 1891 and 1901.

2/8/2005 Always distractions -- though often very useful!  In this case a mystery solved! As expected, we might say we will focus on Hawkins and Currey and so far we've dealt with Hutchinson in London and in Glamorgan!  It has been suggested that Ayerst H could be Aberystwyth ... there was a University there formed about 1872 and then it became part of the University of Wales system in 1893.  Another suggestion is Ayerst Hall ... seems to have some connection to Cambridge.  Ah ha ... it's "Ayerst Hostel" ...

non-collegiate: not being a member of a college. Non-collegiate students were those attached to the hostels founded in the late nineteenth century with a view to providing less expensive access to the university by an avoidance of college fees. Some of these hostels, like Ayerst Hostel and Cavendish College, disappeared; others, like Selwyn and Fitzwilliam House eventually assumed full collegiate status. (ref: http://janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/glossary.xml#host) (not available 10/27/05) ... so, this tells us that the previous write-up refers to the Cambridge experience of Edgar Robert Hutchinson and not his prior education in Wales.  Believe this might be a modern photo of the hostel, http://www.cambridge2000.com/cambridge2000/html/0007/P7281924.html

2/16/2005 Figuring out Ilford and Romford Did a bit of looking to figure out the relationship between Ilford and Romford and London.  Ilford and Romford are considered "East of London" and are northeast of London.  It appears that for Registration purposes, Ilford was a sub-district of the Romford registration district.  In 1901, Eleanor Matthews and family were at 64 Wanstead Park Road which is in Ilford.  When a couple of the children appear to marry before 1910, it was in the Romford Registration district ... so, maybe the family stayed in Ilford.  There is a William Matthews listed in 1914 at 48 Selbourne Rd, Ilford (Great) ... at this time we don't know if this is the appropriate William Matthews.

Okay ... there has been almost 2 months of activity ... so, where are we?  Basically, after an initial spurt on all lines, the Russian, Polish and Canadian branches were put "on hold" to focus on the Welsh/English lines ... Also, the Matthews line is clearly a work in progress and being worked on.

Given that, where are we on the other lines, CURREY, HAWKINS & HUTCHINSON and affiliated lines ... it's time to take stock of what the questions are and if the answers are being pursued!  This is not a comprehensive list of questions ... just some of the key ones!

CURREY:

1. When did Robert an/or Mary die and where are they buried?

2. Can we find a Mary Challenger from W'rington born c. 1778?

3. Details on birth of Robert ... not in IGI. Details on birth of a Mary Challenger in W'rington not in IGI.

HAWKINS:

1. When did George die?  Where is he buried?  What was his occupation?  Any info on his parents?  When was he born/christened?

2. the IGI does not have records for this period for the church of marriage ... St. Augustine the Less, Bristol, though, there is a film available for rental

Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1819-1843

FHL BRITISH Film

3. When and where did Georgina Currey Hawkins marry James Hutchinson?  This had to take place between 1851 and 1856 ... son baptized Jan 1857 ... rechecked FreeBMD for period ... nada ... so contributed more $ to www.1837online.com  and started ploughing through the index pages ... 1st ... marriages for Georgina Hawkins between Jan 1854 and Dec 1856 ... Aha .. found a marriage listed for Georgina Currey Hawkins, Bridgend, Jun 1855 Qtr, Vol 11a, Page 568.  So we know that Georgina left Bristol before 1855 and that though we can't find James in 1851 by 1855 he was back in town (if he'd ever left!).  Rechecked directories, www.historicaldirectories.org  ... didn't find James in the early to mid 1850s and did find another entry for 1871 ... he was selling insurance and had a "fancy repository" on Caroline St. and appears to have been the "Parish Clerk of Newcastle" and he's still listed as the Master for the National School and he was the Secretary of the "Bridgend & Cowbridge Mutual Benefit Building Society." Wow ... one busy guy! (okay ... enough playing with the Directories!) -- also did some actual Hawkins looking in the directories for Swansea and found several listings!  Need to get marriage certificate and hope that an occupation is listed for George! (and not just "deceased")

4. For completeness, find out when George Hawkins Jr died in Swansea.  Found another Swansea source ... City and County of Swansea

HUTCHINSON:

1. When did James Hutchinson Jr die and where?  We know that it was between 1891 and 1901 when he was living in Barnstaple ... a search at www.1837online.com  did not reveal him between April 1892 and Dec 1900 ... though if he died not in Barnstaple, he could have been missed!

2. Pursue James Hutchinson Sr in Windermere

3. Can we find out more about Ann Jones from Pontardulais?

2/18/2005 Currey Family in 1841 Bristol Census Someone on the Bristol_and_Somerset-L@rootsweb.com list was able to help out with the Currey family in 1841 and 1861 census ... as expected ... we don't find Robert in 1861 and 1841 entry confirms that Mary was not originally from the area! 2/18/2005 -- entered into FTM

2/19/2005 Mary Challenger

someone on the Warrington (Lancashire) listed has suggested that Mary could be from Wrington Somerset ....(this has some logic as it would be close to Bristol (about 10 miles) and yet "out of county" for the 1841 census!) ... some genealogy resources are:

FTM Data Entry

Once again, going through collected e-mails.  We always read our e-mails, print out the content (if at all applicable), hold in our in box for a week or two, revisit and file if in-active!  It is so easy to overlook something on a first read ... many things have been caught on a second pass.  So, we are meticulously going through the HAWKINS e-mails.  As we come across data, it's being entered into FTM 2/22/2005 -- more Hawkins family info into FTM -- mostly directory and census info

2/22/2005 St. Andrew's Bristol ... is this considered Clifton? In 1851, the Currey family is on Picton Street, St. Andrew, Bristol ... now, FreeBMD has some deaths between 1851 and 1861 of a Robert, Julia Ann, and Mary Currey ... listed in the Clifton district ... so ... how is Clifton related or not to Bristol.

This site would appear to suggest that Clifton is part of Bristol and that St. Andrew's was a church central to the area.  Though, there is another St. Andrews apparently in Montpelier which is near Picton St ... the confusion!

Used the GRO Certificate services to order the possible death certificate for Robert Currey, 1852, Clifton Registration District.

FHL #1595530 -- St. Augustine the Less, Bristol, 1663-1818 (marriage of Robert Currey and Mary Challenger ... maybe Robert's christening?)

Received correspondence back in February from Office of Carbon Cunty Archives/Records ...with what records they have for Cortright family.  None of it quite looks useful. ==> this prompted a quick re-check/browse of the www for the Cortright family of Mauch Chunk and Allentown.

Monroe County, Pennsylvania was formed from Pike & Northampton counties on April 1, 1836. The county was named in honor of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States.

Joined the Monroe mailing list, PAMONROE-L@rootsweb.com, and sent in a query about CORTRIGHT and Tobyhanna

3/3/2005 More Monroe County, Pennsylvania & Westchester County NY formed from Northampton County, Northampton County Genealogy (GenWeb)

Cannot find BUTLER CORTRIGHT ... before 1850 ... so, don't know where he came from!  Rechecked relevant e-mails and cleared out files

Here is a summary of what we have for Butler Cortright and his descendants!

Apparently several children of Butler and Elizabeth, moved to the Westchester NY area ... at least 3 sons and a daughter ... have tracked in 1900 & 1910 census ; currently data is not entered since a peripheral line.  Westchester Archives might be a useful source if these families are pursued.  Enough dabbling in that area!

Also did some global searching at Rootsweb to make sure that didn't overlook an obvious resource: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi a possible nibble for Deremer (Cortright family) was found and too little information to figure it out

3/6/2005 & 3/7/2005 & 3/8/2005 Matthews Family -- FTM

Entering more data from Mike Johns into FTM ... identifying data gaps such as:

1. Where was William Matthews in 1871?

2. Between 1780s-1790s, Walter Matthews seems to have had children with 3 different wives ... is this true or are these transcription errors? This was between Llansoy where Walter and Mary Harris married and Bassaleg where they subsequently moved.

3. In freebmd, I find a marriage in Dec Quarter 1850 for a Walter Matthews and a Jane Roberts taking place in Abergavenny ... from the 1861 census it looks like Jane was born in Llanellen and it appears that Llanellen is in Abergavenny district ... so, this looks on the surface like a good match for their marriage. Need to pursue!

3/8/2005 Cambrian Index -- Hawkins family in Swansea Received an e-mail today from Cambrian.Index@swansea.gov.uk and it had some listings that seem to relate to George Hawkins, the South Wales Hotel and his wife Ann Thomas.  We learn that George died whilst on a voyage from Swansea to Sables D'Olonne!

3/30/2005 FHL Films The FHL Films ordered covering Bristol and Wrington, Somerset have arrived. The FHC will be visited on 4/1 to take a first look at these films.

So, back to the Currey and Hawkins family file to see what needs to be done!

3/30/2005 George Hawkins In 1861 we have George living with Alfred, Julia Ann and Mary Eliza Dyer... is this a different Dyer family than in 1851 when he was with his mom at the household of John & Jemima Dyer and son John.  Using FamilyHistoryOnline we can find Alfred and Julia Ann Dyer (& a brother Frederick) though no parents!  So, have sent an inquiry to "Wales 3-County Searches"  breccen@consultant.com to see if the rest of the family can be identified, along with a street address.

3/31/2005 George Hawkins Received a reply and learn that the previous 1851 info received was incomplete as was the above info;  the full entry is
