GENEALOGY FROM SCRATCH

Cont'd

(a Web Blog)

This project started 14 December 2004 and encompasses the Bobeyko, Cortwright, Curry, Hawkins, Kamiak/Kaminsky, Matthews, Ozark/Ovcarik, Richard,  Robichaud, Woulf and affiliated families hailing from Chicago, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Poland and Russia.  Ultimately, these families all converged via marriages in Chicago ... in case you were wondering at the connection!  For a full introduction, see the first page of this Blog, Genealogy From Scratch.

REMINDER:  the resources used were a mix of those available for FREE on the internet and others were accessed through paid SUBSCRIPTION services.  If you click on a graphic below, a new window will open introducing you to that service/product.

Small print ... Since each project is unique, it does not mean that all projects would progress this way nor does it mean that we would do it this way if we were to do it again.  We just thought you might find it interesting and valuable to see what goes into a genealogy project.  Also, in the interest of space ... not every single Google search or other activity is listed ... we frequently use an iterative approach where we re-visit resources and research methodology to make sure we followed every possible information lead!  There will also be "pauses" in the action as we work on other projects.  Check back frequently to see how we are progressing!

NOTE: Starting in August, we had less time to work on these families and more time was necessarily spent on performing Genealogy Services for others and engaging in activities related to becoming a "Professional Genealogist." So, scattered throughout the blog are now overviews of what else we are doing -- this mostly helps explain periods of time when we have made no research on these families!

4/2/2005 Challenger Family Sent e-mail to Bristol & Somerset list detailing limited information found to date on this family

FHL Film #1526776, Parish Church of Wrington, Somerset

This film was very illegible (many pages have bled through and the original handwriting wasn’t stellar!), very fragmented and even contained fragments of pages … it probably had more comprehensive and legible records for the 17th century than for the 18th or 19th! This is a list of the few “quick finds.”

Baptisms, 1779 -- Mary dr of William and Mary Challenger, 10 months old, 22 June 1779 (probably our Mary, born c. 1778 who married Robert Currey in Bristol in 1798)

Baptisms, 1783 -- Charles son of Ralf (sp?) and Mary Challenger was baptized 10 Day of October 1782

Baptisms, 1784 or 1785 -- Thomas Challenger son of Ral??? And Mary Challenger

Baptisms, 1785 -- Richard Challenger son of Ralph and Mary Challenger, December 1785

Baptisms, 1787 -- Mary Challenger daughter of John Challenger and Martha Stevens – a base born child, October ??

Burials, 1767 -- Mary wife of James Chalinger June 29

Burials, 1773 -- James Chalinger from Blagdon January ?

Marriages, 1762 -- James Challinger of this Parish of Wrington in the County of Somerset, bachelor and Mary Hincks (sp?) of this parish, spinster married in this church by license on the eighth day of February in the Year one thousand seven hundred and sixty two by me Henry Waterland Recor.  In the presence of John Barnes, Jane Barnes

Marriages, 1759 -- William Bathe of the parish of Wrington Farmer and Ann Challenger of this parish of Wrington Spinster were married in this church by License this twelfth day of December in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Nine by me Henry Waterland Rector.  In the Presence of John Barnes, Jane Barnes, John Green

(the above entries are listed here as they are new data not currently available on the web)

From: http://www.wringtonsomerset.org.uk/history/villagerecords/page43.html

Referring to non-conformists .... "The next two certificates are both dated 13th July, 1791; both are written in the same handwriting, of Theophilus Lessey. The first is a request that a house belonging to Dennis Stallard on Broadfield Down (Meeting House Farm ?), the second that a house belonging to Samuel Bush on Havyatt Green should be registered as a house set apart etc., ...The first is signed by Theophilus Lessey, James Budgett, John Shew, John Noble, John Trew, Samuel Noble. The second is signed by Theophilus Lessey, Wm. Challenger, Henry Budgett, Robt. Parrish, Samuel Show, Charles Warley. These certificates were granted on the 1st September, 1791."

I snagged this piece because I did come across an entry for a Challenger from Blagdon (in Somerset) who died in Wrington

From: http://users.bigpond.net.au/stellers/SomersetPRs/BlagdonM.csv (9/11/06 - inoperable)

This page has some transcriptions by Helen Steller and several entries refer to the Challenger family and their weddings.

4/2/2005 St. Augustine the Less, Bristol FHL # 1595531, St. Augustine the Less, Bristol, 1819-1843

George Hawkins of this Parish and Frances Mary Curry of this Parishwere married in this church by banns with Consent of ___ this twenty sixth day of February in the Year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Six by William Millwren (sp?) Curate.  This marriage was solemnized between us G Hawkins & Frances Mary Currey in the presence of James Currey, John Barrett. (No. 147)

FHL #1595530, St. Augustine the Less, Bristol, 1663-1818)

No.  472, Robert Curry of this parish and Mary Challenger of this parish were married in this church by banns this eighth day of November in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight by me John Casber(sp?) vicar, Robert Currey Mary Challenger in the presence of J Hancock Mary Tuttle

4/4/2005 Cambrian Index have learned that the entry for the death of George Hawkins contains no more information than what was in the index. Have discovered that Les Sables d'Olonne has a web-site, http://www.lessablesdolonne.fr/ and there is also a tourism web-site, http://www.lessablesdolonne-tourisme.com/, and have printed out several maps giving some perspective on it's location. N/A
4/6/2005 FHC Went to the FHC and did some "volunteer" look-ups for members of the Bristol and Somerset mailing list.  Unfortunately, the quality of the films is low and so only a few relevant entries were found. The archive for the mailing list has the found data.  Did find two others with the surname of Hawkins who married in St. Augustine the Less in 1824 and 1825 ... are they related to George?  Also learned that John Barrett witnessed many marriages ... must have been a fixture at the church! N/A
4/6/2005 Brick Wall A genealogy "Brick Wall"  is when you get stuck and have not identified any further avenues of research.  In some regards, we have reached what appear to be Brick Walls for many of the families.  Typically what we do at this point is to start "writing up"  the known information and then try and re-think the issues and possible solutions!  FTM is a very useful tool for cataloguing what you have and showing relationships ... where we struggle is seeing all that you know in one place ... FTM likes to limit your data to preferred data and then notes ... well, we like to have it all in one place; hence, we create a write-up to summarize all known info! N/A
4/6/2005 Hutchinson write-up Since there are NO HUTCHINSON queries outstanding ... we'll start with this family!  First we have created a Family Files page that has all the relevant files created to date! N/A
4/7/2005 Hawkins Posted some queries to: http://www.rootschat.com regarding Swansea and Hawkins and possible relevant records ... also a query to see if he had a will
4/7/2005 Wales Gazetteer Found a great Gazetteer and 1850 map source for Wales, http://home.clara.net/wfha/wales/tallis/ N/A
4/7/2005 Update Resource List Figured it was time to update the Resource list and so that was done! N/A
4/8/2005 - 4/10/2005 Cards by Alysia Work on non-genealogy site, "Cards by Alysia"  ... re-working site, preparing display for a store and updating the web-site graphics! N/A

4/13/2005 - 4/14/2005 Hutchinson Writing up the Hutchinson family ... following it's movement from Westmorland to Glamorgan to Devonshire .... This has involved rechecking resources and revisiting some resources in the search of new information -- nothing new found yet! N/A
4/14/2005 Accessibility It's been a while and so time to check the Accessibility of the site ... focusing on missing Alt Tags N/A
4/14/2005 Family Tree, Ancestry & Eastman's Have added the Family Tree Magazine news feed, news from Ancestry.com and snippets from Eastman's  to the web-site ... this is a good source to find out what new resources have become available... N/A
4/15/2005 George Hawkins Received an e-mail that a query about a will for him (placed at www.rootsweb.com has been answered and one was found.)  The index entry states:

1887
Hawkins, George.  Personal Estate £1,259 11s 5d.
6 October.  The Will of George Hawkins formerly of "South Wales" Hotel but late of 5 Glanmor Terrace Uplands both in Swansea in the County of Glamorgan who died 4 September 1887 at Les Sables d'Olonne in France was proved at Carmarthen by Ann Hawkins of 5 Glanmor Terrace widow the relict the sole Executiix.

This seems to confirm that he died in France ... so, will look into French vital records for Les Sables d'Olonne (Vendee Departemente).  There is a web-site for the Vendee archives, http://archives.vendee.fr/ (note that this is all in French) . Have sent an inquiry off in French (used http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com/ to do the translation ... our French is a little too rusty to do this well!)

Was reminded that there is a utility at http://eh.net/hmit/ppowerbp/  where you can convert a value from one period to another (not later than 2002).  Putting this amount in we learned:

How Much is That Worth Today?

In 2002, £1259 11s 5d from 1887 is worth:

£85,598.91 using the retail price index

4/19/2005 1861 Oldham Census Indexing We are supporting "The Genealogist", via S&N Genealogy in a project to index the 1861 census.  Since we have some lost relatives in Oldham during this period (related to previously researched families), we have volunteered to index a piece of the census N/A
4/20/2005 Hutchinson It's time to finish the piece on the Hutchinson family.  The main family has been written up and now the incidental information collected on some peripheral lines will be included in Appendices. Data already entered; no plans to enter peripheral line data
4/20/2005 - 4/21/2005 Hutchinson Re-checked and did some further census research at www.familysearch.org (1881) and www.ancestry.com (1871, 1891 & 1901) ... almost done!  Lots of work!  Sent out 3 e-mail queries in follow-up and finished a 1st pass at a write-up.  This will be posted to the web-site in the next day or so. 4/22/2005 Hawkins

Heard back from the Vendée archives, http://archives.vendee.fr/, in French.  Apparently, they don't have this information online and they have found his death certificate and are mailing it to me.

"Sur le site internet des Archives départementales de la Vendée, les actes d'état civil ne sont disponibles que jusqu'en 1855. C'est la raison pour laquelle vous n'avez pas trouvé l'acte de décès de George Hawkins daté de 1887.

En revanche les Archives départementales conservent les actes d'état civil de plus de cent ans. Nous avons donc retrouvé l'acte de décès de George Hawkins dans les registres des Sables d'Olonne. Nous allons vous en envoyer, à titre gratuit, une copie par courier postal."

N/A
4/22/2005 Hutchinson Heard back on a query regarding burial records at Llangynwyd for the Hutchinson and related Tudor family ... incorporated the information into the Hutchinson write-up Too peripheral and so not entered
4/22/2005 1837Online Have some unused credits at www.1837online.com that expire today.  So, looking for death of Frances Mary Hawkins, the aunt who was 64 in 1901. Started with 2nd Q in 1901 and worked forward in time.  There is a death listed in 1903 for Romford (Romford is near to Ilford).  There is a Frances Hawkins listed as 63 ... seems a little young since by 1903 she should be about 65-66 ... a possibility though ... searched through 1st Q 1912.  N/A
4/22/2005 REMINDER Was reminded of something important today ... sometimes a database will be up and running and yet not complete.  This just occurred for the 1901 database on Ancestry.com.  It does not show Walwyn nor Sarah Hutchinson Tudor ... yet, we know that Sarah doesn't die until 1910.  Now, we have checked, http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/, and lo and behold, they are listed!  And,  a 1900 Directory has an advertisement for her establishment The "Home" -- Temperance & Commercial Hotel, Talbot Road, Maesteg.  Also, we find her brother Charles in 1901 and he is in Roath and married. N/A
4/22/2005 Hutchinson Sent an e-mail to the Glamorgan-L@rootsweb.com list to see if anyone is familiar with places like the "Horse & Groom"  The "Home" Temperance & Commercial Hotel and various other CWMDU-MAESTEG-BRIDGEND locales! N/A
4/23/2005 Hutchinson Still have credits at www.familyhistoryonline.net and so looked in Glamorgan records for any missed entries ... this site does have the burial index for St. Cynwyd, Llangynwyd covering till 1984 ... found Sarah Tudor in 1910 N/A
4/24/2005 Hutchinson Sent a few more queries ... including one to Bridgend BCBC Library Services [blis@bridgend.gov.uk] to see if we could get a few more details on the "Horse & Groom" and the "Home"  Temperance hotel. N/A
4/24/2005 Hutchinson Completed pieces posted: Hutchinson Family (Large PDF file - 3.8 Meg) & Hutchinson Family Appendices (PDF file - 1.2 Meg) N/A
4/24/2005 Hawkins Started the write-up for this family N/A
4/25/2005 Hawkins Continuing on this write-up.  Doing some peripheral research and trying to fill in the gaps.  FreeBMD seems to show that Mary Currey died in 1858.  We queried the Bristol_and_Somerset-L@rootsweb.com list and learned that from c. 1855 till late in the century there was only one cemetery in Bristol, Arnos Vale Cemetery ...  apparently the Bristol Record Office has the records ... now to see if they can be accessed?!?!?! (there may have been a church yard or too also ... ) N/A
4/25/2005 Currey Find Alfred Currey in 1901 ... lost him after 1852 (when his father died).  Find that he's a retired Congregational Minister, living in Bristol (http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk) ... will now go to www.ancestry.com and see if he can be found in 1891 going backwards using new information on daughters.  He and family were found in 1881 (with some help from www.familysearch.org)and in 1871 ... made more challenging in that the name was Curney and Cuney, respectively!    N/A

(not including these peripheral lines)

4/26/2005 Hawkins & Currey Continuing to work on documenting these families and doing some peripheral searching on the extended Currey family and on the Dyer family ... relates to the Hawkins family and they lived with them in 1851 ... N/A
4/26/2005 Currey & Dyer Sent out several e-mails on these interconnected families.  Have tracked much of the Currey peripheral lines except trying to ascertain the relationship between Frances Mary Currey and Sarah Jemima Currey ... who she lived with in 1851 ... I think they are cousins! N/A
4/27/2005 Cards by Alysia our non-genealogy enterprise "Cards by Alysia"  had us busy this day! N/A

1861 UK Census

Ancestry.com - The #1 Online Genealogy Library!

IMPORTANT NEWS ... Ancestry.com now has the 1861 Census for England, Wales, et al as part of it's collection.  Several establishments had been working toward this and it appears that Ancestry.com has won the race ... until the census is listed as COMPLETE though, recognize that it will not have all entries in it's index!!!!

Related and not!  Yippeeeeee ... there is a family from Oldham Lancashire England that I have found in every census except 1861 and I have been looking for them in this census for easily 10 years ... being able to do a global search, they were found in Saddleworth, Yorkshire (nearby and yet not Oldham) ... why, probably for work!  Also found several other previously missing families in the census!

N/A
4/29/2005 1861 UK Census A little more digging in the census for families.  N/A
4/30/2005 Hawkins et al Continued work on the Hawkins and allied families .... N/A
5/2/2005 Hawkins Received Death Certificate for George from France ... now have to translate it as it's in French ...
5/2/2005 Hawkins Starting to "polish"  the write-up for this family. N/A
5/3/2005 Hawkins Starting to translate the French Death Certificate ... N/A
5/3/2005 Hawkins Continued using the various census resources to follow-up on some peripheral lines (particularly Dyer and Currey) ... no great Uh-uhs found and you never know when something might become important! N/A
5/5/20055 Hawkins Okay ... think with the help of a Glamorgan lister, we have figured that the name of the ship that George died on, while in Les Sables D'Olonnes, was the Rhiwderin ... from, http://www.angelfire.com/de/BobSanders/JCORY.html, we learn

RHIWDERIN          1883-93       1883    Milford Haven Sbldg   1156      Wrecked Sep 1893

5/5/2005 Bobeyka & Ozark Given how many distractions keep coming up in the Hawkins family line, and a family event occurring in June where it's the Bobekya, Ozark et al families who are the focus ... we are shifting gears to see what we can pull together on these families.  Come July, we will "pick up where we left off"  for the Hawkins familiy! N/A
5/6/2005 Owczarek/Ozark Continued with this write-up.  Fleshing out the key data points.  Re-discovered a PDF file created from FTM in January with a basic family structure.  This has now been linked to from the files page that accompanies this project. N/A
5/7/2205 - 5/8/2005 Owczarek/Ozark Re-checked Chicago records sources for any new records and re-checked Ellis Island records for any relatives that may have emigrated following Anton in 1904. N/A
5/9/2005 Hutchinson Received some information actually about the "Horse & Groom" and indirectly learned something about Jane Hutchinson, a possible daughter from the first marriage of James Hutchinson!
5/10/2005 Owczarek/Ozark Re-contacted Chicago Genealogy to look for death certificate for the first daughter that died in the U.S.  Unfortunately, the death certificates before 1912 did not include the names of the parents! N/A
5/11/2005 Owczarek/Ozark Re-checking "death notices" for the family and compiling other records, Chicago Tribune archives available (for the moment) at http://tinyurl.com/8q58y (9/11/06- inoperable) -- didn't see anything new N/A
5/12/2005 Owczarek/Ozark Working with Molly Kennedy, http://www.mollx.com/ to get the death certificates for Anton & Michalina ... hopefully the name of their parents will be included! Status: 5/18/05 -- they are in the mail!  She noted that the variant of the last name was listed as the middle name which is pretty unusual! N/A
5/14/2005 Owczarek/Ozark Another Chicago area researcher was suggested for someone to research into Naturalization Records for Anton & Michalina and family, http://chicago-cook-genealogy.home.comcast.net/  -- so, have e-mailed to see if this is possible. N/A
5/15/2005 Hawkins Decided to recheck www.familyhistoryonline.net for Glamorgan burials and found an entry for George Hawkins buried in Newton Nottage, with particulars matching closely what we know ... then posted an inquiry to someone on the Glamorgan Look-up Exchange and they had George and wife Ann buried in Newton Nottage ... wonder if her family was associated with that church!  (BTW ... this all came amount because the Glamorgan list had someone inquiring about Swansea cemeteries and one thing led to another!)

"Sacred to the memory of George Hawkins of Swansea who departed this life Sept 4 1887 in his 56th year. Much loved and deeply regretted. Also of Ann beloved wife of the above who fell asleep in Jesus Nov 26 1910 aged 80 years"

5/19/2005 -- added this info to FTM
5/16/2005 Kamiak/Kaminsky Still looking for the passenger records for Anna or sisters Malania and Mary!  Aargghhh ... so branched into search for sister Mary once married, Mary Davidczyk (give or take) ... cannot find in 1920 census though have found a possibility in the 1930 census (though listed as Polish!) (www.ancestry.com) nor find her in SSDI, though might have found husband, http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ ... which would leave one to believe that the family remained in Chicago ... also found obituaries for a Frank Davidczyk (with a former wife Mary and former wife Alexandria though we have some notes mentioning a Sofie?!?!?!) http://tinyurl.com/8q58y (9/11/06 - inoperable) ... so, a possibility N/A
5/18/2005 Bobeyko Reminded that Andreu when emigrating in 1910 says that going to a brother-il Gregor Vowick in Chicago ... now, in 1920 census we find a Joe Vowingke with a wife Michalina ... which is interesting as Andreu's mother appears to be a Michalina also ... Cannot find the family in the 1930 census nor listed in the IL death index ... so, once again at a dead end! N/A
5/18/2005 Bobeyko Writing up this section ... double-checking resource materials and doing some further searching ... though, no new info yet! N/A
5/19/2005 Owczarek/Ozark

5/20/2005 Owczarek, Wengerski, Sarytchoff, Davidczyk Heard back on the status of the look for Nationalization Records for these family members ...not much success and still pursuing!  Some records identified. N/A
5/20/2005 Owczarek Received death certificates for Anton and Michalina ... not terribly helpful and new data includes .... (PUT IT HERE!!!) 5/23/2005 -- added to FTM
5/23/2005 Owczarek, Bobeyko Work on both these write-ups ... N/A
5/24/2005 Owczarek, Bobeyko & allied Following upon on outstanding queries regarding some Chicago marriages and naturalization research (see the Chicago resources for the "Recommended" services that we have used!) ... hoping to get maiden names for the women and find out exactly what villages these families came from!  Should receive the naturalization papers the week of May 30th! N/A
5/25/2005 Bobeyko Have heard from someone whose ancestors came from the town next to Matskevichi, his ancestors came from Blevchitsy.  In fact, his web-site has an aerial photograph that shows Matskevichi on it  (lower right), http://www.jeffdemarco.com/Blevchitsy.jpg .  Have sent an e-mail to a correspondent originally from Leshnya to see if this person can help me.  This individual will be visiting Leshnya in the summer and will make inquiries at Matskevichi about Bobeyko (and Kamekova families). N/A
5/28/2005 Owczarek In contact with a researcher whose mother remembers an "Eddie Owczarek."  Well, Anton & Michalina did have a son Edward. N/A
5/29/2005 - 6/3/2005 Bobeyko et al and Owczarek et al Pulled together these write-ups current with currently available information.  They have been posted to the resource area: Bobeyko & Owczarek -- received naturalization papers and not a maiden name mentioned ... though, the Owczarek family are said to be from Kalisz so we now assume the city of Kalisz and not a nearby village.
6/4/2005 - 6/18/2005 All We are unavailable ... will catch up on our return! N/A
6/21/2005 Owczarek Learned results of some research into Chicago records for select children's birth records -- NADA

Heard back from Polish Archive about researching family in Kalisz ... also heard back from a researcher who has done research in Kalisz with some suggestions

Learned tidbits about the children of Anton and Michalina at a family reunion ...

>>Helen married several times, including Friedman, Robinson and a Scandinavian name (this now correlates to a contact made by someone with an obituary for a Helen Erickson that mentioned Jesse Purcell and Ted Ozark!

>>Ed actually went by Ed Shepherd ... which is a translation of Owczarek (Poltrans came up with Sheep Hand!)

N/A
6/21/2005 Bobeyko Heard back from Russian military archives ... can only search an individual if you know what their military affiliation was ... oh well, can't do ==> dead end N/A

6/22/2005 - 6/26/2005

All Reformatting the Genealogy from Scratch web-pages (along with whole web-site) N/A
6/27/2005 Owczarek/Ozark It has been suggested to contact the Catholic Church Archdiocese that the churches of Kalisz belong to ... they might have both the civil and the church records for this family.  It looks like we can only find a mail address: Archiwum Diecezjalne we Włocławku, 87-800 Włocławek, ul. Gdańska 2/4, though this might be a web-page, http://www.diecezja.wloclawek.pl/ (except it's all in Polish!) ... so, have sent off an e-mail, in Polish, to the Archdiocese Secretary, Sekretarka: s. Ewa Kardas ZSNM, mgr lic. pr. kan., mgr pr. cywilnego (ewa.zsnm@diecezja.wloclawek.pl) N/A
6/27/2005 Poles in Chicago Found this interesting article on Poles, http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/982.html & another interesting article on Multicultural Difficulties in Chicago's Polish Catholic Community, http://www.lib.niu.edu/ipo/iht629923.html (related teaching materials with some great information included at: http://www.lib.niu.edu/ipo/iht629923cm.html) (the latter article & teaching materials appear to be unavailable -- 10/27/05) N/A
6/27/2005 Poles in Chicago Sent an e-mail to the Archdiocese of Chicago to see if they have any "finding aids" for Polish Churches in the early 1900s ... given that we have addresses and no idea of church affiliation ... http://archives.archchicago.org/genealog.htm N/A
6/29/2005 Poles in Chicago Received a reply from the Archdiocese of Chicago with a list of so-called "Polish Churches." ...

we also learn that the church that Antoni & Michalina were associated with at the time of their deaths is closed (http://www.italianancestry.com/chgclosed.html) -- St. Hyacinth Mission (Spaulding Ave.): 1944-1956; records at St. Hyacinth (Wolfram Ave.) -- note: this somewhat contradicts Michalina's death notice in 1964! Though another notice mentions the church as Our Lady of Fatima Mission Church -- well, this is also a closed church (same source) -- Our Lady of Fatima Mission (Christiana Ave.): 1944-1990, Polish; records at St. Hyacinth (Wolfram St.) ... Now, St. Hyacinth is a big church -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_St._Hyacinth  -- supposedly it has a web-page and we have not found it to be working ... www.sainthyacinth.org (unavailable 9/6/05)

6/30/2005 - 7/4/2005 July 4th Holiday No activity!  Happy 4th of July N/A
7/5/2005 Hawkins & Currey Family It's time for a change of pace ... after spending the last two months on Polish & Russian emigrant families and hitting some brick walls probably requiring writing non-English letters ... it's time to revisit some of the UK lines and work in "English" for a bit!  Since the Hawkins family write-up was furthest along ... we will continue with this piece to get it to a finished state.

Started with adding an ancestral tree for Eleanor Matthews ... this shows the relationship of: Matthews, Hawkins, Hutchinson, Currey, Jones, Challenger & other UK lines plus Cortright, Kannapel and  Deremer as US lines

7/5/2005 Hawkins Reformatting the write-up, adding in some newer information on George Hawkins and his death, burial and will! N/A
7/6/2005-7/10/2005 Hawkins & Currey Family Continued working on pulling together the write-up.  Done some rechecking of census, www.ancestry.com , BMD, http://freebmd.rootsweb.org, and directory listings, www.historicaldirectories.com.  Additionally, have sent some e-mails to try and get some more info about Ilford (figure that the daughter Frances Mary Hawkins died there) and some other inquiries. N/A
7/11/2005 Resources Update Engaged in our bi-weekly update to the genealogy newsletter clips that we carry.  Don't forget that we regularly post most of the "Family Tree Magazine News," a snippet from the "Ancestry Weekly Digest" and a snippet from "Eastman's Online Genealogy News." N/A
7/11/2005 Currey Family Continued working on finalizing this bit.  Got a bit distracted researching the Derham family from Yatton (Alfred Currey married into this family) N/A
7/12/2005 Hutchinson Realized that had made a discovery about the Hutchinson family, a half-sister to James Hutchinson, Jane ... we had lost track of her after the 1841 census and through some serendipity, rediscovered her via  "The Horse and Groom" ... started writing up this Addendum ... working back on Lewton and then Luton and other clues, tracked her and husband Charles back in time ... found her in the 1851 census stating Abbots Leigh as her birthplace ... see next Hutchinson entry for details on the search!

Did we mention that her 2nd marriage was to John Tudor... the same John Tudor who upon her death married her sister Sarah? So, we were also able to track Jane forward and then track her husband and it linked with what we already had for the sister!

??? How does one link the same husband to 2 sisters ... need to figure that one out! (posted query to ancestor.com message board)
7/12/2005 Family Tree Maker As we have found historically, a program like Family Tree Maker is nice for collecting discreet bits of info ... and it is also nice for creating some great family tree graphics and we really like doing "narrative" genealogies -- basically, to try and write a story about these people. N/A
7/12/2005 Leigh Somerset Queried the Bristol & Somerset mailing list about what Leigh this could be? N/A
7/13/2005 Hutchinson Aha ... have tracked Jane Lewton (nee Hutchinson) through her marriage to Charles Lewton ... found him & family in 1841 and Charles & Jane in 1851 ... in both cases just down the street from her father on Bowrington in Maesteg!  This 1851 entry was significant as it states her birth place as Abbots Leigh Somerset (so, now we know which Leigh).

Using this information from www.familyhistoryonline.net, we then looked for a marriage for James Hutchinson to Martha (mother of Jane) ... Yes ... found an 1824 marriage in Long Ashton of James Hutchinson, Abbots Leigh to Mar Atkins of Long Ashton!  Abbots Leigh matches birthplace of Jane, obviously James Hutchinson matches her father and Mar could be Martha!  And, a lister found a baptism for Jane, daughter of James and Martha Hutchinson!  Apparently she also had a sister baptized in 1825 ... have to figure that she died before 1841 or left home early!

This tells us that at a minimum, James Hutchinson was born in Westmorland, migrated to Abbots Leigh Somerset and then moved to Bridgend Glamorgan ... there are also Robert and George Hutchinson who migrated from Stavely Westmorland to Glamorgan -- are they related?

7/13/2005 -- entering data into family tree ... going backwards and including Tudor information due to link with sister Sarah ... no plans to enter all sibling info at this time
7/14/2005 Hutchinson Working on a Hutchinson Addendum that will cover the information found on Jane et al. doing more research on the family ... found Half-sister Elizabeth, her marriage and family. Created PDF version and posted to web-site -- Hutchinson Addendum N/A
7/14/2005 Hawkins Created PDFs of main file and Appendices file and posted to web-site ... Hawkins Family & Hawkins Family Appendices (remember that these include the Curr(e)y Family!!) N/A
7/15/2005 Matthews Started working on this write-up ... Walter G. Matthews emigrated from London England via New York to Chicago, Illinois.
7/16/2005 Matthews Have pulled most of write-up together ... in process of rejoining MONFHS Yahoo Newsgroup ... hope to get copy of 1881 census for Jane Matthews, some Matthews Wills (Wales) and tidy up a few other bits before publishing.
7/17/2005 Cortright Started working on this write-up.  After Walter G. Matthews emigrated, he married Emily Cortright, from Allentown Pennsylvania.
7/18/2005 Cortright Cont'd working on this write-up.
7/18/2005 Matthews Worked a bit more on adding maps and other images to "liven" up the presentation. N/A
7/19/2005 Matthews Have re-joined MONFHS ... working to get wills for James Matthews (LL/1772/120 ... will dated 9.12.177) & Walter Matthews will LL/1823/7 -- it also appears that Pencarn Farm was near Coedkernew (the farms were east of this locale) & that some archeological work was done in the area of Great Pencarn Farm!  Also, it was part of the Tredegar Estate and the Tredegar House is still standing as a historic building and can be visited.
7/20/2005-7/21/2005 Matthews Cont'd working through the papers ... looking up stuff for each of the small communities -- maps (modern and old), records, etc... N/A
7/22/2005 Hawkins Corresponding with an archive and an individual to try and get a photo of the South Wales Hotel or at least the vicinity of it on High Street, Swansea! N/A
7/22/2005-7/25/2005 Cortright, Deremer, Kannapel Cont'd working on write-up ... Working through e-mails with scanned images of book pages related to Mauch Chunk's history for entries relevant to this particular branch ... lot's on N.D. Cortright and that doesn't help us at the moment! Posted queries to a "Mauch Chunkers" message board, the Dimmick library in Jim Thorpe and sent follow-up e-mails to others researching these names in Mauch Chunk. N/A
7/25/2005 Hutchinson Received the article written on "Moses Margam" who was a foundling and married into the Hutchinson family ... a daughter of James!  It's a fascinating read!
7/27/2005-7/28/2005 Cortright Sent current write-up to two other researchers working on these same lines to see if anything obvious is missing & working with the Dimmick Library
7/29/2005 Matthews Re-looking at Matthews and Roberts family to see what outstanding questions there are!

7/30/2005-7/31/2005

Matthews

So much to report ... forgot to post anything!

1. Worked on the Roberts family ... have identified their farm as Cwm Celyn, Llanellen ... someone actually remembers the Roberts family at the location and could give me directions to find the farm at Old-Maps ... will be working with Mike Johns to get some tithe/apportionment maps from the c. 1840 time frame to find who the actual landowners for this, Pencarn, and the other farms are.

2. Researched what a "farm bailiff" is.

3. Got the marriage certificate for Walter Matthews and Jane Roberts (1850).

4. Got the birth certificate for grandson, Walter Matthews (1882).

7/31/2005-8/1/2005 Cortright Jack Stirling has found the MI for Peter Deremer from a new source he has come across ... some transcriptions for the Mauch Chunk cemetery from "before" it became official ... Peter was born 5/3/1809 and died 8/27/1856 -- well, this ties into a pedigree published at rootsweb ... http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=lrichwirtz&id=I1594 which takes the family lines back to Holland!  We have sent an e-mail to the pedigree "owner" to try and link up and maybe that person can help with the marriage to "Mary Quick!"
8/2/2005 Cortright, Deremer, Kannapel Looking through various online archives, rootswebs, usgenweb, etc... for any references to these families
8/3/2005 Same families Received from Dimmick Library some copies of newspaper notices for this family
8/3/2005 Kannapel www.castlegarden.org has just opened and so we searched for Charles Kannapel.  According to his citizenship papers, he arrived on March 19, 1851 ... well, we found something for March 20, 1851 ... whose going to quibble!  It's easy to see Kannapel becoming Kanappel becoming Kanappel ... coming from Havre also is consistent!

And, learn that it's probably a brother Louis who emigrated on the same ship!  BTW ... looking at www.ancestry.com for this same passenger record and looking at the image of the original manifest ... the name looks like Charles Kanapel!

CHARLES KANASSEL
Occupation Farmer
Age 18

8/4/2005 Kannapel Played around with www.geneanet.com and sent some e-mails to a couple of individuals researching Kannapel (or variants) in France ... asking if they have come across a Charles and/or Louis born c. 1830?
8/5/2005 Kannapel Someone found a Charles and Louis Cannaple (correct ages) in the 1836 Alsace census with parents (Soultz-sous-Forets) ... then by going back to geneanet, discovered that someone was researching the same family ... though didn't have Charles and Louis listed with the parents and they have the family going back many generations.  Have sent an e-mail query to this researcher.
8/5/2005-8/12/2005 Genealogy Services Working on a genealogy research project for a customer -- Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Chicago connections ...
8/13/2005

Deremer, De Remer,

De Reamer et al

Going through collected papers and doing some more "looking" in Sussex & Warren Counties NJ for the Deremer family.  Have written a letter to the Warren County Library, Local History and Genealogy Department to see if they can help with the Deremer family.
8/14/2005 Archive CD books Archive CD books was having a 1/2 price sale on UK publications ... we ordered 4 for our library ... one will apply to the Matthews family and the remainder are for other genealogy projects and future reference.
8/15/2005 Scottish Research Spent some time checking into some great Scottish resources ... this is associated with some past research done ... always nice to revisit when possible and new resources become available or are updated.  One source that is helpful is the FreeCens project (companion to the Free BMD project) ... it doesn't have a lot and what is nice is that it does have the 1841 census for many areas ... as the first census that lists names, it's nice to have free access to it!
8/15/2005-8/18/2005 Kannapel & Cortright So much ... 1. in touch via Alsace message board with several individuals who have helped locate some Kannapel records in Soutlz-sous-Forets, 2. Have received obituary and death notice for Elizabeth & Butler Cortright from Mauch Chunk
8/17/2005 Bobeyko Heard from someone who traveled to Matskevichi, talked to the town elder and took many photos of the town and the cemetery... what a gem!

8/20/2005 Genealogy Services Continuing work on the research project ... passenger list, UK census and UK Directory research
8/20/2005 Personal Family History Gained access via a lister to the 1841 census for Lincolnshire and believe have found the OLDFIELD family ... an about 10 year "brick wall" family ... meaning, some place you are really stuck in your research!  Even though the 1841 census does not give details on relationships or where born ... you do get age approximations, those in the abode at census time and whether born in or out of the county ... with this information, one can then go to FreeBMD or other locale-specific resources to do further research!! Have submitted a query for someone to look at the 1851 census ... a family was found and provided more questions than answers!
8/21/2005 Cortright Someone in East Mauch Chunk drove by the area where the Cortrights used to have their house ... on Lehigh Street between 7th and 8th ... there is still a house on an alley that could be from the 1800s ...
8/22/2005 Deremer

>> Learned that Mary Quick Deremer Davenport had a will ... have sent a check to get a copy of it

>> In contact with someone else researching the same line to compare notes, especially on the ancestry of Peter Deremer ... his NJ origins

8/23/2005 Matthews Received a packet of the tithes and associate maps ... covering the 3 farms that we know the family was associated with.
8/23/2005 Matthews via e-mail, received images of a document, pertaining to Mary Matthews Morgan, sister of Walter Matthews ... and it involved her brother Richard and sister-in-law Mary Matthews (widow of brother Walter) ... it will take a bit to decipher it all out ... a day when I have more time and patience!
8/24/2005 - 8/25/2005 Roberts Working on write-up for the Roberts family (married into the Matthews family) in Llanellen ... gathering some more information via monfhs requests etc.
8/25/2005 Mauch Chunk Received a pictorial book on Mauch Chunk ... mostly covering the mid to late 1800s which is when the Cortright, Deremer and Kannapel Families lived there.
8/26/2005 Deremer Letter to a long-time Deremer researcher to introduce myself, share what I know about Peter and see if she has any thoughts/info on his marriage to Mary Quick!
8/26/2005 Roberts Have written to the current "William Roberts" in Llanellen Wales still on the family farm to introduce myself, explain what I have learned and see if there are any "stories" etc that he might share with us.
8/27/2005-8/28/2005 Taylor Family This is a personal genealogy ... have posted information found in 2004 and 2005.
8/29/2005 Roberts Okay ... apparently, William Roberts and Elizabeth (TYLER) married 20.05.1817 Newland, Glos ... William being from Coates Glos -- so, have posted inquiries on several related message boards!

9/6/2005 Genealogy Services Finished the initial report for the above project. Posted it to the web-site.
9/6/2005 Kannapel Continued corresponding, in French, with the French researchers.  Also, knowing that Louis Phillipe Kannapel "hung out" in Manhattan, did some searching and found him in 1900, 1890 (Civil War Veteran) ... in Manhattan.  He died in 1901... found him in 1880, also Manhattan and not earlier though know that he became a citizen in the 1850s.

Status ... as of 9/29 have indexed 120 pages of the registration district -- the halfway point!!! Yippeeee

10/2/2005-10/3/2005 Hutchinson Incorporating information on Moses Margam and family (wife Elizabeth Hutchinson and children) into the Hutchinson addendum. The addendum has been updated!  The story of Moses is very interesting ... the addendum includes little on it ... the full article is:

Phillips, Cyril. Moses Margam, a foundling, 1819-1889. Port Talbot Historian 4/2 (2000), p. 51-57”... am working with another Hutchinson researcher to see if we can confirm that a Hutchinson was the first traveler to the US and then the Margam family followed.

10/4/2005 Hawkins Incorporating some photos of where "the South Wales Hotel" had been in Swansea and some information on the ship Rhiwderin .... into a new Hawkins addendum, now on-line.

10/9/2005-10/10/2005 Cortright A few more queries e-mailed off as we fine-tune the write-up on this family.  Found a bit of info from the c. 1860 time frame. The Cortright Family report has been posted.
10/11/2005-10/14/2005 Deremer

Working on compiling the collected information on the Deremer family.

>> may have identified the 2nd husband of Mary Quick Deremer Davenport -- Stephen Davenport of Luzerne County ... this could explain several of the children's presence in Luzerne county.  He dies about 1885 which is consistent with Mary's obituary.  His first wife dies before the 1870 census and we find Mary and daughter Martha living with Stephen Davenport in 1870.

>> filling in details on children of Peter & Mary

>> hypothesizing about Peter & Mary -- their marriage ... have not found the marriage and think that may have found the parents of Mary ... there was a Mary Quick born 1812 in Oxford Township, Warren County, NJ ... this is adjacent to Independence Township ... she is unaccounted for in a published genealogy!

>> sent query to someone whose web-site has extensive records for the area and who has some QUICK ancestors herself.

10/15/2005 Kannapel Have learned quite a bit more about Louis Kanapel and his Civil War Service -- have sent off an inqury to the New York State Archives to get his Civil War Service Record.
10/16/2005 Deremer Focusing on Isaac Deremer ... Finished up the Deremer piece and it's now posted to the web-site ... Deremer Family 101705
10/17/2005 Bibles & Personal Family History As part of the NGS course, there is a section on family bibles.  That reminded us that our "gran" had mentioned that there was a TAYLOR family bible.  So, we wrote our uncles and asked for copies of the bible pages with any hand-written family data!  Well, we received copies of the bible pages and copies of some documents contained in the bible -- these included birth, marriage and death certificates and cemetery grave purchase receipts and more!  Much of it overlapped/confirmed what we knew and there was some new info!

With this information we revisited the Chadderton, Butterworth & Hicklin families since we now knew where Daniel Butterworth (died 1885) was buried.  We also learned that he was buried with 3 children who died between 1887 & 1892.  Making use of http://freebmd.rootsweb.com and www.ancestry.com (census) ... we were able to identify the children as those of Rachel Chadderton Butterworth Hicklin and her 2nd husband Henry Hicklin.

10/18/2005 Genealogy Services Doing a new project -- taking 2 disparate family lines and trying to identify if there is a common name.  Aha ... WILSON ends up being the common name!

Newland P Gloucestershire ENG 1584 Monmouth Gwent County RO, Cwmbran

11/1/2005 Genealogy Services Searching for a common name in a large metropolitan area!
11/2/2005 Genealogy Services Never underestimate the headaches that can be caused by transcriptions!  Have been searching for Langenbrunner and it was indexed in 1930 as Sangenbrunner ... so the "start with" options and "Soundex" options wouldn't work ... finally searched on first name/birth date/birth location and linearly looked for something that could be correct!
11/3/2005 Matthews started transcribing a document pertaining to Mary Morgan, a Matthews by birth.
11/4/2005 Community Service doing some more transcribing of the 1861 Census for an ED of Oldham Lancs.  In the course of doing this, came across a Samuel Wolfenden, 81, retired hatter, born Oldham ... wonder if he is somehow related to our Wolfenden family ...  maybe a father of James Wolfenden Sr or an older sibling (born c. 1780)? Have e-mailed Oldham Local Studies to see if buried in the same cemetery as James.
